I just logged onto Ebay and went into my watched auctions and noticed that I was currently the high bidder for an item I set a snipe for on Saturday which is due to close in four days. Message in my snipes says "PLACED SUCCESSFULLY". Can anyone tell me what the heck happend? And is there anyway this can be undone without going through Ebay and removing the bid myself!

Have you checked that a bid has actually been placed?

There is an inaccurate notification problem that has been well reported on this forum.

It mainly take the form of "outbid notices" on a strange auction. I had two of these, the first one I rushed in and re-set, but the next one I simply ignored and AS worked as normal (correctly).

This has been what normally happens as far as I can gather, but only one person has, so far, reported an incorrect bid.

Could you report back on this issue, please?

If you have had a bid placed in error, then this would be a very worrying development and I expect AS would want you to notify them of all the circumstances, because it threatens the accuracy of their whole system.

I.B.,

The reason that sometimes happens is that AS uses multiple servers (4+) to place snipes. This better insures that at least one of those snipes will be placed. But, if two or more of those snipes get placed at exactly (I mean EXACTLY) the same time, ebay can’t react fast enough to block the extra bid(s). Whenever you see that, it’s proof that the snipes were placed by a service, and weren’t placed manually.

I think someone once show an auction where 4 snipes appeared in the bid history (all with the same timestamp), but that only happened once. Two snipes aren’t all that uncommon. It’s not a bug, other than on ebay’s part, but it probably causes other bidders to wonder what the heck is going on.
