First of all, no, no one can see your snipe. It is not placed until the last seconds of the auction. Only AS and you can see it until then. A bid group would not help in this situation, only bidding high enough to win.

A snipe is to keep you out of a bidding war, thus running up the price of the article you want. It is a one time placed at the last few seconds proxy bid.
You cannot stop it happening, Lesa.
Look at it a different way, though: if you set either a proxy or a snipe (the only difference is in the time that the bid is placed) using the maxiumum that you are prepared to spend (doesn't everyone do that?) then you will either win the item, or someone else will because they wanted to spend more on the item then you did.
Either way, you do not have a problem, or do you?
