In this case it would have told you:
Problem with bid amount
Your bid of 5.55 is less than the minimum bid. Please go back and bid at least $6.02. (Please type numbers and the decimal point (.) only)
If the current bid is $5.52 you can bid $5.55. eBay doesnt work that way. You need to bid at least 50 cents more than the current high bid. Which is $6.02 in this case.

Hmmm ... my lead time was 5 seconds ... the auction ended at 6:46:29 which means my bid should have been place very close to 6:41. The other two bids:

$5.02 Jul-27-03 06:44:07 PDT
were, in fact, placed after mine should have been and, mine at $5.55, would in fact have met the required bid increment if it were placed at correct lead time request.
Perhaps I am still missing something here ... I often do make mistakes ...
