A fourth of Washington’s army (Continentals) mutinied over pay and enlistment duration, wounding 2 American officers and killing one in the process. When another 200 soldiers mutinied, Washington sent troops and had the ringleaders (sergeants) arrested. Lots were picked and 3 of the sergeants where shot by the remaining sergeants.

July 4th trivia:

John Adams (2nd U.S. President) and Thomas Jefferson (3rd President), both died on the same day – the 50th anniversary of Independence Day.
Vicksburg (last Southern blockade of the Mississippi River during the American Civil War) surrendered on July 4, 1863. For the next 81 years, which was well over 2 years after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Vicksburg did not celebrate Independence Day.
