Why the free snipes?

A quick question: I have been using AS a few times now and generally think the system is great - win some, lose some and all that.

One thing I can't quite fathom is that I have just been given three free snipes. Reading through other posts, it appears that it might have something to do with the referral system. Or am I wrong? Can we be told who has signed up?
