whine from a newbie

I am extremely new to eBay and all;

I had heard such tales of the bargains available there, but is it almost a given now, that people get into that spirit of bidding, go crazy, and no one can ever get a real bargain on anything there?

I'm trying hard to replace a piece of equipment I unfortunately lost, and had really hoped this would be an economical way to go about it, but I've been in over a dozen auctions, and nothing ever ends up within my price range.

I think people go crazy beyond what the cost ought to end up as.

Or, is this just inexperienced disillusionment?
