All AS does is hide you bid from others until the last (I use 8) seconds. If you use proxy bidding then all can see your bids and can nibble away until you lose, AS limits the reaction time and increases your chance of winning. Remember, it's not the last bid but the highest bid that wins.
As to snipes not being placed - AS bids whatever happens - if your snipe was set to $1 and the item was at $100 it would still try to bid on your behalf. Obviously it would be rejected and not appear in the history. Likewise if your snipe was less than 1 increment above the current highest, AS would try but fail.
Never use AS for must have items, always add a few cents to your max and let AS do the work for you!
