What's all this "min bid = buy-it-now" stuff, anyway?

Have you seen "auctions" where the minimum price is the same as the buy-it-now price? Am I the only one who thinks this takes all the fun out of auctions? Or am I just nit-picking?

I mentioned this annoyance to someone yesterday. She replied, "Well, you're always welcome to bid above the buy-it-now price!"

Seriously, though, is there some advantage behind treating eBay as an online store to sell your stuff, as opposed to alternatives?
