Absolutely. You don't have to be the last person to bid, just the person with the highest bid received in time by eBay. Usually, you won't be pushed to your max bid but if you are you'll be glad you had it in place. And if you're outbid, well, somebody else wanted the item worse than you did. There's always another chance on eBay, even for the scarce items.
