Just in case, after all this jollity, someone wondered what had happened re the original post...

I tried again after about 30 mins and cleared all characters with additional delete keyings in all fields and it finally worked - whether then recovered or just temporarily suffering from invisible character insertions within apparanetly empty fields (I have known this) I cannot tell - but it now works and I am once more a happy sniper!
