Without further info, I'd guess it would have been difficult for you to a) realize you were outbid, and 2) get ANOTHER bid in manually if your snipe went in within the last 10-15 secs. That's why you'll read several forum posts extolling the importance of setting your snipe to your MAXIMUM bid. That way, if you win, you're happy; and if you lose, you won't mind losing to someone who paid too much.

RE: Monitoring the end of an auction realtime -- better done on ebay screen than AS screen. There are even some sites that auto update for you (Anyone care to list some?).
