Sniper Did not update current bid amount while bidding

During the 7 second lead time that I set, it placed my bid and the auction ended. I did not win. There I was confused while watching because my max amount was higher then what it was showing the current bid still was and ended at. My max bid was set for $16.00 and when it ended it showed me on my sniper screen if that's what we call it, that it ended at $12.00 It wasn't until I went to eBay.com to see what it really ended at, which was $18.50

My main question is, does this happen to others and often? I had no way of knowing I was being outbid. I'm new, so any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
