A simple suggestion.

I understand the problem with updating items every time we display the snipes. How about displaying the time each item was updated? There are ways to display it in the local time of the user (e.g., javascript).

If you can't display it in local time, how about displaying how many hours/minutes ago the data was updated? Then you don't have any time zone issues.
