Paypal Surcharges

What does everyone think of the increasingly adopted habit of sellers asking for a surcharge on the price of an item if you want to pay with Paypal?

I really like Paypal because it allows me to easily buy things from the US without all the hassle and expense of getting cheques in Dollars, but 3% can add quite a lot to the cost of an expensive item.

I've also noticed that there is a lot of variation in the amount sellers are asking as a surcharge - although 3% seems normal, I have found 4%, 5% and even 8%!

The claim that Paypal is "free for buyers" is rather spoiled when you are having to pay 5 or 6% extra for the priviledge! (sp?)
