Catey, you have been rightly told that AS will bill you if you win, so long as your snipe was placed. They still performed the work. This is explained in the FAQ.

I think another issue is why your snipe was not your max. The whole point of sniping is to bid your absolute max, which apparently was not the case here, since you then manually bid more. Had you placed your true max in your snipe, then AS would have been sending you a victory note! Had you not had the good fortune of being at the computer when the auction ended, you would have lost the auction, even though you would have paid more.

Normally you only get one shot with a snipe, so make it your absolute max.
