One for the books!

Okay, this is so my fault, but I have a question about it. I told a friend about something that I wasn't bidding on at that time and then decided I would like to bid on it. In the meantime my acquaintance started bidding on the item. I didn't want them to know that I was going to go for it so I started a new account with a new name. I ran home from work but in the chaos I went in and raised my maximum bid but under the name I always use and not the new name (last 4 mins). When the final bidding came in, the last amount was $50 but jumped to my aliases' max bid of $85.00 and then my own name's bid of $86.50 ($150 being my max bid) which won the item. My question is why would the bidding go from $50 to $85.00? Isn't it supposed to go to the next increment until the time runs out? I was angry with myself for being so stupid, but I am curious about the increments. That was the last time I will do this. Life's confusing enough.
