Oh man how do I explain this one? Am I in trouble?

Dear fellow snipers,

Yesterday, I won an item that I sniped. I looked at the bid history and sure enough my bid came in with 10 seconds to go.

Today, I got an e-mail from the buyer I outbid who is a new user with a feedback rating of 1. Incidently, he's a nibbler, but that kinda goes with the territory of a new eBay user.

ANYWAY, he writes me an e-mail stating that he got his bid in, the item closed, and THEN my bid arrived saying I won AFTER the item had officially closed. He wants to know how this happened.

Obviously, I wasn't there to see this unfold, so I honestly don't know if that's what actually happened. Not to mention that I don't really want to get into the whole Auction Sniper issue. That's pretty much a can of worms I would think.

So, what do I do?
Do I just ignore the e-mail?
Do I tell him that I put the request in and I saw that I won the item and it may have been internet traffic or an eBay error on his end?

Has this ever happenned to anyone here? I mean, I'm guessing Confused that the bid got put in legally per eBay, but what may have caused this?

Any help would be great.
