If your auction ends in the evening and on an exact quarter hour (or a few seconds before) I would add a little more lead time. Maybe double that.

Actually, no. Sniping is to prevent bidding wars by placing bids very late. You CAN still get outbid. Remember that the bid amount that is showing on eBay may or MAY NOT be the other persons actual maximum. It's not the last bid that wins, it's the highest.
