I'd add, alternatively, smreynard, you could of course propose to him to relist the item as a Buy-It-Now (at the same original price, or even with a few dollars added, if it's important enough for you). With this on-ebay transaction, you also shouldn't have to give an explanation for missing it before.

I've done this twice when I've missed items (my own fault), inviting the seller to relist as a Buy-It-Now and even add a dollar or two for good measure. Both times the seller was perfectly happy to list as a Buy-It-Now at the same original starting price plus the dollar or two. They were relatively cheap items, though.
