Max bid and final paying price

Hi,
I'm new to sniping and ebay auctioning. I've read through posts and the tutorials but am confused on what amount AS bids in the delay time. If my max bid is 45 and the current price is 26, will AS bid 27 or 45? And how do you adjust the increment that AS bids at?
