Lost very important auction - bid not placed. Why?

I bid on item 1076843734 today and went to bed and left AS to do its job (the auction ended at 4.am my time) after leaving AS a lead time of 10 seconds. My proxy of $54 was FAR higher than the winning bid. But it was not even placed. The status says "invalid user id/pass" what does this mean????
