Lost an auction due to "unable to sign in"

Just lost an auction on unable to sign in.

How does this happen?

My bid was higher than the winning bid and I have no issues logging into Ebay.

The auction ended at 14:15 PDT

Could someone explain what happened and how to prevent it in the future?
