I'm new and having a bidding question

I set my max bid at $7.00. I hit "ready", AS bid. I got outbid. Now do I have to keep bidding manually until the end of the auction or will AS automatically keep increasing my bid when I hit "ready" again? The last time I hit "update prices" nothing happened (that's after I got outbid the first time) and AS showed that I was still winning (I'm not now). I'm afraid that if I let AS "take over" the auction for me, I'll lose - I really want this item. I just need to know if, since AS already placed a bid for me in the beginning, is it up to me to continue bidding manually?
