If you buy from a shop you pay your money and you get your item.

If you bid on eBay with AS and win, you pay your money and get your item.

If you bid on eBay with AS and lose, you pay nothing and get nothing.

Thus your shop example doesn't really work - with AS you lose no money if you don't win...
