I'm a book collector, and one of my pet peeves is that some sellers will proclaim an edition to be "early" or even a "first edition" when it was published 40 years after the author's death, and written nearly 40 years before that. As you say, if the seller doesn't know, he or she has no business making statements like that. They don't fool me, but I wonder how many new collectors are gullible enough to believe the incorrect description and buy something that isn't what it was advertised to be.
