While the displayed bid was at the opening price, the other bidders 'max' was higher than that. It's called proxy bidding and you can learn about it >HERE<. Also click on the number of bids in the auction at eBay to see the bid history.

AS bids the max you enter and it's eBay that does the proxy process.
