We are all here because we are in one way, or another all addicts of acquiring goods on "evilbay" (Even if you trade commercially, you must be a keen buyer because AS is really an acquiring tool)
I thought it might be interesting if you could all post what you do collect and then others could pick your knowledge on the subject. That does not mean a public discusion even - I recently had a series of emails asking my opinion on a particular model of SLR. Here goes: 1950s & 60s German Rangefinder cameras. Kastrup Holmegaard Canada glassware B & O Amplifiers Old Dinky Toys None of this is probably of interest to anybody, but yours might well be. So confess all and see what the response is! Who knows, it might be the start of an interesting thread. Paul West Wales - Dolphin country |

Hmmm, well, I like to collect signed glass paperweight, but I seem to buy a lot of books, religious items, cameras, computers, and an assortment of too much junk!
Trouble and the Grace to bear it, come in the same package. |

Some of what I buy is the sort of stuff a lot of people buy in the malls. It's just easier to get it on eBay than to drive all the way into town. I buy books on eBay for the same reason.
I guess you could say I collect spinning wheel figurines, especially if they're the same style of wheel as the one I use. |

Almost everything. Depends on what is the kick I am on at the moment. Right now I am working on a charm bracelet (second childhood I guess). I just collect all kinds of junk.

A load of old junk...
Right now I've got back into Soviet memorabilia - always been a politico, it fluctuates between modern British politics and the Soviet Union, sometimes the one influences the other (Tony Blair as Stalin?!). I like dolls in ethnic costume and make my own, so I get the beads etc I need off eBay. |

I dont collect anything in particular...well, except odd Robbie Williams stuff.
I just buy what I feel I need at the time. Recently, 2 pairs of Oakley Sunglasses, unusual watches, kids clothes and Diesel jeans. Just whatever takes my fancy. I am in the market for a PDA, some Bessemer cookware and the baby enstein collection on DVD. It seems to me, I can often find what I am looking for cheaper OFF ebay, but you cant beat ebay for off the wall stuff that is hard to source. Camera - are you only knowledgable in still camera's or are you a wealth of information about digi's as well? Lexie |

I have as they say, "sufficient" knowledge on the subject, without in any way being an expert. The are now many web sites doing test reports and they get a chance to comprehensively review cameras. I am in the process of writing test reports on older cameras for a large dealer, so his customers can read "all about it" but so far I have had a Canon EOS1 (with a Rolleiflex is on its way)
If you look at the page I put up for reviews on all Canon models, you will see that there is a now vast number of people writing test reports on them! All Canon Reviews I need to do another update as the market moves so swiftly and Canon has introduced another batch of new models. The average "market life span" of a digital compact camera tends to be eight months now before it becomes "uncompetitive". DSLRs have a slightly longer "shelf life", but sometimes this too becomes wallet frightenly short (Olympus & Pentax come to mind as they struggle against the market leaders) However, if you just want "common sense" advice as to what features to look for (and this applies to other AS memebers) just PM me. Me? I stick to Nikons from the 80s and have abandoned all thoughts of a DSLR until prices come down and performance rises. I rarely use my digital compact now as I find it far too slow to catch my Grandson in action (compared to any old film camera) I tend just to use it for web work. If you want to take children & people (e.g. at weddings) There is no substitute for a reflex film camera with a fast "long focus" (80 - 105mm) lens to isolate your subject and blur the background. With prime lenses so cheap on ebay now, I have never owned so many excellent Nikon lenses before in my life. Paul West Wales - Dolphin country |

Currently I have a Minolta DiMage Z1, I bought it for the zoom (30x) and quite like it...although I am tossing up on one of the new Nikon DSLR's.
I do the books for one of the local camera shops and they help me out price wise, although the Minolta I bought direct from Hong Kong and got it for a steal Lexie |

Camera, wish I had the knowledge to use them. I just use a 5.1 digital, but I have a lot of photographic equipment that I inherited.

Oi you! B***** Off!` and discuss Confucius in your own thread!
This was a serious attempt to see what people collect. But then how can we take some one who collects a Robbie Williams Beanie baby seriously! Paul West Wales - Dolphin country |

Since I respect Camera, I won’t tell Lexie that a bigger bugger would be my concerned for the hose instead of the well. But, I won’t tell her that – out of respect. What’s B***** Off!? Is that a new insecticide? |

True, true....but then...how can we take someone seriously who wont say Bugger without "*" it out? Lexie |

Steering the topic back, I cannot say that I collect in quantity anything in particular; I use ebay like a car-boot sale.
I tend to get old radios - 1930 to maybe 1970, radio test equipment, the occasional clock, the occasional pressure stove or lantern. Nothing of too high a value - too risky unless I can either see it or specify exactly what pics to send me. A typical bunch of things I recently sold: A wine filter Some vintage car magazines Part of an old car radio I have recently bought: A Fitzroy barometer A radiogram I am looking for: A coil winder A 1950s/60s Goblin Teasmade I am going to sell shortly: A Metz camera studio flash Couple of Russian cameras A load of camera bits and cannibalized cameras A Lanchester 'driver's instruction card' Ho hum..... |

Boy, a few years back I would have had some interesting UHF and VHF radio transmit and receivers equipment. I had got them at an auction and had to take them along with what I wanted. I finally had to give the items away. When you say coil winder,I assume you mean the kind for electronic equipment??

Yes, IRBS, that sort. I have an increasing pile of things that need rewinding and would be a pain to do manually. 2 clock motors, a clock alarm buzzer, an output transformer from a radio, and a cordless drill charger. Oh yes, a transformer for an inverter to 'make' a 90 volt 'battery' for a portable radio. Your Tx + Rx stuff would have probably have sold on ebay |
