Continued.......you may yawn if you want!

I owned:
Lanchester 10
George and Fred Lanchester, two Cornish brothers, made the first production British car at the end of the 19th C.
Mine was 1934, and had the usual preselector gearbox and fluid flywheel, as does the AEC Routemaster (red London bus!). They amalgamated with Daimler, and ceased in the late 1950s.

Humber Hawk
Luxury car from Rootes Brothers in the 50s/60s

Jaguar Mk VII Big 1956 3.4 litre Jag
5 Austin 7s - 1927-1937
The original "real" small car for the masses
Without them, there would not be: Jaguar, BMW, Nissan, Reliant (shame!) That's another story, though.

I have enjoyed driving:
Bentley 3 litre
Austin Heavy 12 1927
Citroen XM

I would like to drive (to see what the fuss is/was about):
Any new Jaguar
RR Silver Shadow
Lexus (Luxury brand of Toyota)

Two-stroke Trabant.
East German car which had a 3-cylinder 2-stroke engine, and used petroil (oil mixed with petrol) for lubrication. Many Eastern bloc cars were similar.
They had a plastic body and superb build quality, but bore many urban myth jokes.

NSU Prinz
NSU perfected the first rotary engine developed by Felix Wankel, and still used by Mazda. This car was the timeless RO80.
The Prinz was a small car with a twin-cylinder aircooled engine - some versions were highly tuned. VW bought them out.

It’s obvious by those pictures that teasmade users are intelligent (well, some of them).

That post provided details about the cars I wasn’t familiar with, but you left out why you would like to drive a big Cadillac from the 60s.

I once had a 1968 Cadillac Fleetwod series 62; driving it in city traffic was kind of like piloting an aircraft carrier in a small harbor.

Those of you in the US probably dont know that this car is marketted over there as the Pontiac GT and exported from Australia

I can't believe nobody has said this yet, but the Holden Monaro is NOT sold here in the US as the Pontiac GT- it's the Pontiac GTO . May not seem like it makes much difference, but it's actually quite huge. I don't know what the historical significance of the Monaro name has in Australian auto timeline, but the GTO badge hearkens back to the Pontiac GTO "Goat" of the musclecar era. Rebadging the Monaro as a GTO was a largely unsuccessful GM sales ploy, since it shares virtually nothing with the original GTO's but the name, it was mostly rejected by the GTO faithful. I'm sure Pontiac could have sold twice as many Monaro's here if they hadn't called them GTO's.
The GT badge, on the other hand, has little significance. Aside from Ford's new megabuck "Ford GT" -a rebirth of the Ford GT40 from back in the day- GT is not a model name, it's more of a trim level (i.e. Ford Mustang GT, Pontiac Grand Am GT, Porsche Carrera GT, Hyundai Tiburon GT, etc...) and it is shared by most car manufacturers. The GTO name is licensed exclusively to Pontiac, and has an old and glorious history with originals in good condition commanding prices double and triple that of the new "GTO"... which I prefer to think of as a Holden Monaro, regardless of what GM says it is here in the US. Hope this doesn't come off sounding like a flame, it isn't my intention, I'm just a car nut.

It is in the original post, Rick, but I missed the quote tag - I've edited it now.

GT stands for gran turismo, or, as the Italians say, grand touring.
I won't give you the Mikeism for this, as this is a family show! Eek

That's generally true, or at least it was once upon a time, as the GT badge tends to find it's way onto the sportier and/or more "loaded" models- although not without exception. I believe it's really only applicable when referring to the GT series of racing, and over the years various manufacturers have ripped it off for their own models whether they are worthy of the Grand Turismo racing circuit or not; and it's logical to do so, because the GT badge definitely sells cars. My point was that no one company has exclusive rights to the GT nameplate, and to say "Pontiac GT" you could be referring to anything from a Fiero to a Grand Prix to a Sunfire; and to say just "GT" could mean anything from a $18K Hyundai to a $140K Ford. "Grand Turismo" does give it some relevence though, at least in theory, so it was unfair of me to say it has NO significance. I just figured at that point I'd probably said more than enough, being my first post and all. I get rankled when some self proclaimed authority on something comes crashing into a forum I'm a veteran of with both guns blazing... so I'm just trying to keep my hypocracy in check. Thanks for the clarification- in retrospect, I probably should have mentioned it.

I never thought I'd be having this discussion on an auction sniping board... I like you folks.

Don't suppose we could get that Mikeism in a pm, eh? I'm pretty curious too...

I thought the same thing, Dave, so I was beginning to think Mike had been in the navy.

JB,

After reading your posts, I think you can drop “self proclaimed”, or even the “self”. In fact, you’d qualify as an expert witness.

Mike,

Can I assume that the bold letters are in the first word?
SMARTEST GLOW

If either word is Brit slang, I’m dead.

Afraid not, Mike. Haven’t put the first word together. Is it a slang word that a Yank wouldn’t normally know about, or one of those Mikeisms that isn’t usually found in the public domain? If it’s either of those, I’m going to have to throw in the towel. The second word was easy, as I pride myself on knowing non family show words. But, if the first word isn’t X-rated, and no one else comes up with it, I think we’ve been evasive enough to short-circuit any censors.

JBear,

Perhaps it’s time to get a new hatter, or a new drycleaner. I suppose there’s the possibility that the hat was left in the sun. Of course, you may not have adequately tipped the hatcheck person. It might also be time to visit a barber.
