What dooes this mean? Also - what does it mean when it says "bid successfully placed" but does not say "won?"

Well, proxy outbid would mean someone out bid you with a proxy bid. Your bid sucessfully placed would mean it got placed, but it does not mean you won.

yes, but how does one "proxy" a bid on ebay? And what causes a snipe-set bid to show as "successful" but not "won?" That's what I'm not sure of. Neither of those messages show in the AS pop-up glossary.

Sorry but no, I haven't. No time. I figured if I posted here I might get an answer more quickly. Guess I was wrong, eh?

And at the risk of seeming so myself, why do you folks sound so condescending? I was looking for a quick answer, not a squeegie hunt. I use AS because it's quick and dirty and I don't have to waste a lot of time loading and re-loading. Why would I have searched eBay for something if I thought I could just come here and get the answer, toot sweet?

Perhaps it's because you're asking a question about a term inherent to the way eBay functions, and one that any eBay novice would understand if they simply read eBay's help files. Then you get huffy when we don't jump to answer a question you should already know the answer to!

Proxy. When you place your bid on eBay, eBay will enter only the amount of your bid needed for you to win at that time. The difference between your bid and what was needed to outbid the previous bidder is held 'in proxy' (until needed). When someone else places another bid, your bid will be raised (up to the maximum amount of your bid) enough to outbid them (if your bid was higher).

Auction Sniper told you that it placed your bid, but that someone elses bid was higher.

Is that satisfactory dearie, or would you rather we ran off to eBay, copied and pasted the relevant sections of help files and faq's, bundled them into a nice neat little binder and dropped it at your feet?

I'm not a novice eBayer, and I know what Proxy means. Apparently, I'm having trouble communicating what it is I really want to know, so I'll just take my toys and move over to the corner until my coffee kicks in and I've stopped figuratively kicking the dog. (No, PETA, I didn't REALLY kick my dog...)

I take it by the last line you mean tout de suite (right away)? I think the short answer is that people were trying to point out that in the time you took to post the question here and await a response, you could simply have gone to eBay help, typed in the words "proxy outbid" or whatever, and gotten your answer tout de suite, even more quickly than you would here. I do not think they were trying to be condescending.

Also, lately we have received more and more new AS users who are obviously also new to eBay, and often they do not yet fully understand how eBay's bidding system works, so it is sometimes difficult to explain the AS-eBay dynamic to them. Your question about proxy outbids suggested that you are also new to eBay.

When you are proxy outbid, it simply means that your snipe lost to a higher bid, one that was placed earlier in the auction, possibly even days before. It is a reminder that one must have the highest bid to win, not the last. But we snipe for the simple fact that many (or most) eBay bidders do not bid the most they are willing to pay, but just enough to make them the high bidder. Though they are willing to bid higher and pay more, they get caught with their pants down when we snipe at the last minute.

I don't "work" here either, but the assumption must be that if you are answering posts then you must be willing to provide information,correct? You choose to "work" here simply by nature of the fact that you ARE here, providing said information.

"Work" is not necessarily that for which one is paid in one's national currency.

These boards exist as a source of information. Perhaps they also exist so that some can feel intellectually superior to others who apparently don't "know" as much.

I asked a simple question when I came here - and you replied with a snippy, superior attitude calculated to indicate, to anyone more astute than a box of dirt, that my question was beneath your notice but you'd deign to "answer" it.

You did not answer it. You simply proved that you could use the terms correctly in a sentence. On the other hand, "Chatter" answered my questions, and quite clearly.

I'm not certain what you folks found so objectionable about a new AS user asking what certain terms mean, but apparently looking for a quick answer when one is rushed for time isn't the done thing around here.

I'll get my answers the old-fashioned way: Time-consuming research and trial/error.

"Chatter" and "BJones" are the only members of this board, thus far, who exhibit a bit of diplomacy. "BJones" was so skillful with his/her written articulation that I immediately saw where I could have offended and posted an apology.

I also laughed out loud at that post because s/he captured the essence of my poor attitude with such humorous remonstration that I immediately liked this person.

Serenity's posts, which are laden with superior attitude and signed with a cutsie smiley face, are quite along the lines of a "raised" southern belle who will end the utmost in derogatory comments with "bless her heart!"

i.e. "That Uska! She thinks she can come on this board as a newbie and expect real answers to her stupid questions. Bless her heart!"

Sadly, looks like you were correct. I think originality scares some people, as you can see. I call this the “feeding-frenzy” phase of the topic – there’s always another scavenger around to nibble scraps from the remaining bones, or get a few last licks in.
