I sent the error message to AS for you. I think it is an error message on their end, not your's.

You're right - it's a server error which is a bug on the server. Sometimes a refresh (hit [F5] in IE) will make it go away, sometimes you have to fire a programmer...

Typical support response! It's got to be a software/server problem - I really cannot see how deleting cookies can cure it and, as deleting cookies might cause you problems on other sites, I'd suggest a tad irresponsible...

R2, just curious..how can deleting cookies cause you problems? I delete mine every night before I shut down and I know that Steve said one time he did also.

Cookies are used by sites to 'remember' you. So, for example, if you log into AS or this forum regularly then having cookies saves you the hassle of entering your ID and password every time - ideal if only you (or a trusted few) use your computer.

As you can see, they're not too big so won't fill up your computer even if you have lots of them!

Cookies do not carry viruses and can not be made to do anything to harm your computer. When you visit a particular web site, your browser’s cookie file is checked to see if you have a cookie for that site (information saying that you have been there before.) If there is no cookie present the web site will send a cookie to your computer that assigns a number to you. The web site will know only your number, not your name or any other information you have given out. That will only appear to you when you enter the site again and begin to fill out your information. The cookie then associates the number it has given you with your previous information.

Unfortunately, not all cookies are placed on your computer by reputable web sites. There are companies that use the power of cookies to their advantage. By placing cookies on your site they can track your surfing and send you advertising in the form of pop-ups etc.

So, if you visit websites that are not reputable then you might want to clear out your cookies regularly. But that gets rid of the 'good' ones too. Hence, I use Adaware to clean mine out - I end up with the good cookies (Auctionsniper, eBay, Amazon etc) and lose all the bad ones (train-spotting-teens, naked-ambitions, rude-awakenings etc)

At the end of the day it's a personal choice but I hope the above will now make it an informed one!

I use Netscape 7.1 which allows good control of cookies. Each time you access a new site and it asks to set one you have the option to allow or deny and also to make that your permanent response to that particular site so you never see them after that.

It also allows you to edit out selected ones from the list and to change your mind.

Some sites from whom I regularly buy videos, model kits and tools need to have them operating or you can't put items in your basket, if I deleted them all it would be most inconvenient.

Internet Explorer offers the majority of users the same options - I'm happy to let cookies accumulate without bothering me - I (obviously) avoid dodgy sites and spring clean with adaware so alles ist gut!

I leave my cookies alone and clean with adaware every month or two. I delete them sometimes as needed as well. It doesnt affect my ability to use any of my favorite sites other than having to remember my userId and password to log into them again.

I think some people wrongly believe that if you delete your cookies, other people cant track your movements on the www from another computer.

As I understand (I was told in a quite lengthy nerdy version from my other half),this isnt true, as its not *your* cookies that are telling others where you have been (unless they are viewing files at your puter). Its the website's that you are members of and their prominence with the search engine used.

Ie, if I searched a username that I use on another forum, my name and profile comes up on google, if I clean out my cookies, that username still comes up.
