Are chances of having this error, and therefore no snipe registered, increased by the time to snipe, etc,?

What happened has little to do with the lead time you set, so you don't need to make any changes. This error occurs when Auction Sniper tries to bid for you, and eBay returns a server error. We are doing all that we can to prevent this from happening. One way in which we try to force your bid through is by placing your bid up to 15 times when one of these errors occur. However, this does not always work. Nevertheless, we are working around the clock to ensure that your bid is placed.
