How come the time is not counting down today? Have tried refreshing page, closing browser, restarting, clearing cache, etc, to no avail.

this makes me a bit nervous since I lost two auctions yesterday when AS froze.

The countdown has nothing to do with AS's servers - it's some cr@p code on the My Snipes page put there, it seems, to add to the confusion!
