if i put shorter lead on my snipe (say only 1 second) will that have less of a chance of following through?

Don't worry about seconds - worry about $'s. Snipe high, not short.

I personally think you would have a good chance it would not get placed! Rick is right. What matters is you bid the most you want to spend. The highest bidder wins!
