I just lost an auction to a higher bidder, which is no problem, they were willing to pay more than i was, but on looking at the bidding history afterwards, there was no mention of the snipe AS was supposed to put in with 7 seconds to go? Is this because AS didn't do its job, or is it usual for Ebay to not make a record of unsuccessful last second bids on the bidding history?

Assuming “unsuccessful” means that your snipe wasn’t at least an increment above the current price, then YES it is usual. If “unsuccessful” has a different meaning, then post link to bid history and your snipe amount.

Cheers.

AS bids as if it was you so, just as if you had tried to place a bid that was below the next increment, eBay won't accept it and, obviously, it won't show in the history.
