It's a Scottish thing about which I know nothing but Google came to my rescue. They are, I guess, made of wool so you could knit one but I guess you'd have to use very thin needles....

Answer: Somewhat. The first picture ( black jacket with silver buttons ) is of a style called Prince Charlie. It includes a waistcoat and does not have the gauntlet cuffs of the argyll jacket.

I remember from my childhood somewhere in Australasia a fad for ladies underwear (careful, I was only 9) called Witches' britches - these were a bit like cycling shorts and were coloured red with black trim round the legs - hmmm, strange they haven't made a comeback! Wink
